Zebra Danio (Danio rerio)

The Zebra Danio (Danio rerio), often called the Zebrafish, is one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish. Known for their bold blue and silver stripes and active nature, these small fish are perfect for both beginners and seasoned aquarists. Native to the streams and rice paddies of South Asia, the Zebra Danio is hardy, peaceful, and a joy to observe.

Native Habitat

Zebra Danios are native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar. They thrive in shallow, slow-moving waters such as streams, ponds, and rice fields, where vegetation is dense and currents are mild. This adaptability to different water types has made them an ideal species for aquariums around the world.

Appearance and Size

Zebra Danios have a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body adorned with horizontal blue and silver stripes that stretch from gill to tail. Adults typically reach about 2 inches (5 cm) in length. Their constant movement and sociable schooling behavior add energy to any aquarium.

Albino Zebra Danio

The Albino Zebra Danio displays a pale cream or pinkish body with light gold stripes and striking red or pink eyes. Although less vividly colored, they offer a beautiful contrast in planted tanks and share the same care needs as standard Zebra Danios.

Diet and Feeding

Zebra Danios are omnivores and enjoy a variety of foods. In the wild, they eat small insects, worms, and algae. In captivity, they thrive on high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter ensures balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts once or twice daily, and remove uneaten food promptly.

Behavior and Compatibility

Zebra Danios are peaceful, fast-moving, and highly social. They spend most of their time swimming near the top of the tank. Their playful nature makes them a great choice for community tanks, but they should always be kept in schools of six or more to prevent stress and fin-nipping.

Sexing and Breeding

Sexing

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Males are slimmer with a golden sheen, while females are rounder with a silvery body, especially when gravid.

Breeding

Zebra Danios are egg scatterers that breed easily. Provide a separate breeding tank with marbles or mesh to protect eggs. Maintain a temperature of around 78°F (25°C). A conditioned pair will spawn at dawn, scattering hundreds of eggs. Remove adults immediately to prevent them from eating the eggs. Fry hatch within 2–3 days and should be fed infusoria or liquid fry food before progressing to baby brine shrimp.
