The Look

Blackwater aquascapes use tea-stained water, leaf litter, wood, and soft light. Contrast comes from silver fish and pale sand patches.

Do not chase crystal clarity — the tint is the aesthetic.

Building Tannins

Real Reef Canada

Catappa leaves, alder cones, and wood release humic compounds. Replace botanicals as they break down.

RO water and gentle peat-style buffering help keep pH soft and stable.

Livestock Fit

Tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and soft-water invertebrates often shine here.

Avoid hard-water livebearers and African rift cichlids.

Maintenance

Vacuum gently so you do not remove all litter. Monitor pH after big water changes with alkaline tap water.
