Healthy fish in cycled tanks tolerate 3–4 days without food easily. Week-long trips need a plan; two weeks needs trusted help or reliable automation.

Before Departure

Large water change week before, then smaller change day before leaving. Clean filter intakes. Test heater and verify timers on lights.

Feeding Solutions

Auto feeders tested twice before trip — they jam or overfeed commonly. Portion lightly.

Vacation blocks dissolve unevenly and foul water — avoid unless species tolerate and tank is large.

Human Helpers

Write one-page instructions: do not overfeed, how much top-off water, emergency phone. Hide extra food to prevent 'kindness' overfeeding.

Show sitter where breaker and overflow shutoff are if applicable.

Return Home

Lights on gradually; test water before big maintenance panic. Small water change if sitter overfed.

Inspect equipment for failed heaters or clogged intakes that ran unnoticed.
