What UV Actually Does

Ultraviolet light damages the DNA of algae cells and many free-floating bacteria and parasites passing through the chamber. It does not sterilize the entire tank — only water that flows past the bulb at the correct rate.

UV is excellent for clearing green water blooms and can reduce ich tomont exposure in some setups. It will not cure established infections on fish already attached to hosts.

Sizing and Flow Rate

Manufacturers specify maximum flow for sterilization versus clarification. Clarification allows higher flow; parasite suppression requires slower contact time — often a separate bypass loop.

Undersized UV on high flow looks installed but accomplishes little. Match wattage and flow to tank volume and goal.

Installation Tips

Mount vertically if instructed, with the pump after mechanical pre-filtration so the chamber stays clear of debris that blocks light.

Replace bulbs on schedule even if they still glow — UV output drops long before visible light fails. Clean quartz sleeves gently during maintenance.

Freshwater vs Reef Considerations

In reef tanks, UV may reduce some beneficial plankton in the water column but can help with bacterial blooms during nutrient spikes. Many reef keepers run UV intermittently during outbreaks.

In planted tanks, UV does not replace addressing excess nutrients and light driving green water — fix the root cause while UV clears the bloom.

Realistic Expectations

UV supports — not replaces — quarantine, water changes, and stable filtration. It is a water-quality tool, not a substitute for overcrowding or skipped maintenance.

If fish are sick, diagnose and treat appropriately. UV may lower reinfection pressure but should sit alongside proven therapies.
