Why Phosphate Matters
Orthophosphate feeds hair algae, cyano, and diatoms. In reefs, elevated phosphate binds calcium and dulls coral tissue even when alkalinity looks fine.
Zero phosphate is not the goal — corals and plants need trace amounts. Problem is chronic excess.
Common Sources
Overfeeding, tap water, dying algae, unwashed frozen foods, and low-quality carbon add phosphate. New rock and sand can leach temporarily.
Test tap and RO product — some municipalities carry surprising phosphate year-round.
Testing and Targets
Hanna or Salifert phosphate tests on reef tanks weekly during algae battles. Freshwater planted tanks also benefit when green water persists despite good CO2.
Many reef keepers aim hobby-test 'undetectable' to 0.03 ppm for SPS; planted tanks may run slightly higher without issue if algae is controlled.
Reduction Methods
Increase skimming, harvest macroalgae, vacuum detritus, and reduce feeding. GFO media in reactors drops phosphate quickly but must be replaced before release.
Large water changes with low-phosphate source water fix spikes faster than media alone on neglected systems.
Avoiding Overcorrection
Stripping phosphate to absolute zero can cause coral dinoflagellate issues and pale tissue. Reduce gradually and observe.
Fix export before buying every chemical pad — husbandry beats hardware on most algae outbreaks.
